think about when seeking a replacement TV.

Are you still using a dated, clunky, energy sucking tube television in your Man Cave? Sure, those old CRT tubes have a ridiculously long lifespan, but they’re also energy hogs, take up lots of space and are really heavy to move to another location if you decide to change the layout of your room. If your TV is ancient and has a bulky tube screen it’s probably time to upgrade to a current model television. Don’t worry though, upgrading isn’t painful at all and you’ll love saving money on your electric bill, too. Here are some of the basics things to think about when seeking a replacement TV.

The first thing you need to figure out is how big of a screen you want. A good thing to note here is that televisions are measured diagonally from corner to corner across the screen. This might make it a bit more difficult to figure out if a particular TV set will fit where you want it to. Luckily, you can usually find the height and width measurements of any set on the manufacturer’s web site.

Once you figure out the size screen you want, you also have to think about what type of screen you want. The three technologies you want to focus on are plasma, LCD and LED. Each have their good and bad points which I’ll briefly touch on below.

With some LCD television prices falling

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) televisions now range from small desktop models 15-inch designs right up to 70-inch widescreen mammoths complete with embedded speaker units and TV tuners. For LCD screens which are smaller than 32 inch from corner to opposite corner a High Definition LCD TV are still sold throughout the market place at a high premium cost.

A 28-inch HDTV LCD can be found on the market place for as low as £250.00. For larger display sizes of 52 inches and bigger and LCD will be priced competitively in comparison to a plasma screen. With some LCD television prices falling by as much as 25 percent over the course of a year.

In terms of picture quality LCD screens are continuing to improve however they don’t feature the same level of quality as plasma screens which use a range of gases to form the image. The contrast ratio is often poorer in LCD screens. This is generally because they struggle to form jet black and darker grays than plasma televisions. The response time is also much slower and reduced in comparison to plasma screens. This slow reaction which can be counted in milliseconds forms a ghosting of high speed images such as sport or video games. However, this blurring has improved along with the development of faster and more powerful processors.
